The fourth annual crop review was held in Chennai. Sixty five invited dignitaries attended. One crop report each from Tamil Nadu, South Andhra, Central AP, North AP, Odisha, West Bengal & North India and West Coast of India (Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala) were presented by regional experts, Mr A. Kumaresan (Sheng Long), Mr V.R. Mansingh (CP), Mr Shrinibas Mohanty (Avanti), Mr Ganesh Arekere (CP), Mr Anupam Pande (Poseidon) and Mr Vivek Kadolkar (Grobest). The session was moderated by Mr S. Muthukaruppan. At the end, SAP's veteran data masters and Past Presidents, Mr Ravi Kumar Yellanki, Mr S. Chandrasekar and Mr Muthukaruppan reconciled the shrimp production data with the export data, hatchery production data and feed sales data. Our estimate for farmed shrimp production in 2023 was 900,000 tons. Compared to our estimate for 2022 which was 930,000 tons this was a slight contraction. But, there is a general consensus that production will drop in 2023 on account of depressed global prices and increased cost of production. We may end up producing 750,000 to 800,000 tons in 2023.
The stakeholder discussion moderated by our Immediate Past President Mr Ravi Kumar Yellanki in the afternoon took each major impediment to the sector's growth and analyzed the reasons and tried to come up with answers. We certainly need to work with broodstock suppliers to come up with disease resistant stocks. We have to ask the farmers to stock only if they are confident of a successful crop, stock well within the carrying capacity of the farm and look for every opportunity for operating cost reduction. Government has to work on barriers to exports in the European and Asian markets.
The final presentation of the day was by yours truly on domestic marketing of shrimp. If we want one third to one half of our farmed production to enter into domestic market, we need to organize ourselves better and promote shrimp much more aggressively. We have floated a plan that gained wide acceptance during the meeting.
On February 24, 2022 SAP conducted its review of the shrimp crop in 2021. In the closed doors event in which about 30 invited participants presented regional and sectoral reviews of shrimp aquaculture in India in 2021. The results revealed a surge in farmed shrimp production to a little more than 900,000 tonnes in the year. As always, Andhra Pradesh contributed more than half of this production. Just three districts, Krishna, West Godavari and East Godavari, contributed to half of India's production (and more than what Indonesia and Thailand, some of the top ranking producers in the world contribute now) and the increase in this region was the reason behind India's surge too. A detailed report based on the review is under preparation and will be shared towards the end of March.
Society of Aquaculture Professionals (SAP) concluded a review of shrimp farming in India in 2020. In a series of virtual meetings held among industry stakeholders on January 29-30, 2021, the unanimous opinion was that farmed shrimp production declined from a record production of nearly 800,000 tonnes in 2019 to about 650,000 tonnes in 2020, a 19% drop. Earlier forecasts in meetings organized by SAP in 2020 were nearly 30%, so the actual decline was less than what was predicted. The present review highlighted that while the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown of 2020 had an immediate as well as lasting negative impact on shrimp farming, processing and exports. However, production losses due to diseases continue to mount and require urgent attention. While farmers are adapting measures such as short crop cycles, nurseries and the use of functional feeds to counter the problems, much productivity loss can be averted if diseases are managed well.National level surveillance of shrimp diseases needs to continue but with greater focus and accountability. Producers need to follow the principles of sustainable farming, especially in the areas of pond preparation, on-farm biosecurity measures, seed selection, stocking and farm management. At a higher level, understanding the carrying capacity of the ecosystem that supports the farming as well as the individual farming units themselves is of utmost importance. Investments in the improvement of infrastructure to support the farming intensity, and choice of the right genetics for the production systems would be critical to success in challenging times.

The “Global Shrimp Markets: Looking Beyond the pandemic” webinar organized by the Society of Aquaculture Professionals, live on Zoom from the 23rd to 24th of September, 2020. COVID-19 is complicating the supply chains in most of the shrimp farming countries and disrupting the markets in the major shrimp consuming countries. This webinar had provided perspective about both supply & demand sides of the market. On September 23rd, global experts on the shrimp business, namely George Chamberlain (Global Aquaculture Alliance), Angel Rubio (Urner Barry), Vincent Lin (Grobest Foods), Pawan Kumar Gunturu (Sprint Foods) and Willem van der Pijl (Shrimp Insights) have provided an outlook of markets in the U.S, E.U and China. On the 24th, the supply scenario in India (Paresh Shetty), Ecuador (Gabriel Luna), Vietnam (Samson Li) and Indonesia (Haris Muhtadi) have been discussed. The webinar concluded that the Global Shrimp demand supply has only moderately been affected by disruptions due to the pandemic and it is more likely that the response to price falls would redefine markets in future.
